Traditional Indian Jewelry: Bangles

Bangles are a main part of traditional Indian Jewelry. The name "bangle" is derived from the Hindi word bungri. They can be worn stacked high for impact or individually for a more subtle look. They are round in shape but not as flexible as a bracelet. Indian women often wear bangles in pairs on one wrist or one on each wrist.

Bangles come in all color and designs. They can be made out of precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum. Other varieties include glass, wood, ferrous metals and plastic. Plastic and rubber bangles are fashionable with young girls. Gold bangles studded with precious and semi-precious stones such as diamonds, gems and pearls are expensive, but worth the price tag for their beauty and quality. Glass bangles are mostly used in traditional functions, marriages and festivals.

They play an important part in Indian bridal jewelry as they are the sign of a married woman. Red glass bangles are compulsory for an Indian (Hindu) bride. Bangles are the best way to represent tradition with fashion. Indian women can wear various types and designs of bangles with different outfits. The traditional dress of India would be incomplete without the added beauty of bangles.
