Anklets (Payal)
Anklets, also known as payal, are ornaments worn around the ankle by women, young girls, and newborn baby girls. They are available in silver and can be encrusted with diamonds, beads, crystals, semi-precious stones or even seashells. Other metals that are used, although rarely, are brass, bronze or copper. As some sacredness is attributed to gold it is not often used to make anklets.
Known for their beautiful carvings, embellishments, and countless styles, anklets are worn for festivals, traditional occasions and marriages. An anklet usually has small bells that make a very sweet noise while walking, thus drawing attention to the wearer's feet.
In ancient India, delicate chains with tinkling pendants were worn around the ankles; some were made of a series of chains fastened with a jewel-set clasp. These anklets would sometimes reach halfway up the leg and be attached to a detailed network of chains across the foot. Nowadays, youngsters wear anklets in the name of fashion, not tradition, as they go well with every outfit.
