Knowing the Four C's: A quick guide to buying diamonds.

There are four major components to consider when buying that coveted diamond tennis bracelet or princess-cut engagement ring. They are known as the Four C's: Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat. Understanding these four diamond characteristics will help you wisely decide on the best diamond for you or your loved one.

Color - The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) rates the body color in white diamonds from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). White is the most popular color when it comes to diamonds, but for those that want to be unique, they are available in yellow, pink, green, blue, orange, even black! However, the best color is really no color at all. Having no color allows the light to pass through the diamond easily, resulting in a vibrant display of rainbow-colored light.

Clarity - To be perfect, a diamond must be free from inclusions, blemishes and other flaws. A clarity grade is determined by the amount of inclusions or blemishes that are in or on the diamond. Inclusions can be other minerals, cracks, feathers or anything trapped inside when the diamond was formed millions of years ago.

Cut -The cut of a diamond references to the diamond's reflective qualities, not the shape. A good cut gives a diamond its brilliance. The angles and finish of any diamond are what determine its ability to handle light, and the price you will pay.

Carat - A carat is the unit of weight by which a diamond is measured. Because large diamonds are found less commonly than small diamonds, the price of a diamond rises exponentially to its size. The carat is the standard unit of weight used for all gemstones. One carat equals .200 grams (or 200 milligrams).

Hindu Wedding Rituals - Part Two

    • The Wedding Ceremony
The wedding ceremony is performed by the priest in the presence of family and friends. The bride and groom are seated in front of a holy fire. The couple walks around the fire seven times exchanging vows of duty and love, fidelity, respect and a fruitful union.

    • Kanya Daan (Entrusting of the Daughter)
The bride's parents entrust their daughter in the safe keeping of the groom and his family.

    • Ashirwaad (Blessing)
The priest explains to the couples their responsibilities towards each other and then gives them his holy blessings.

    • Datar (Salt Ceremony)
At the entrance of their new home, the bride’s feet are rinsed by the groom’s parents. A cover is placed over her head as she sprinkles milk in all corners of the house. The bride picks up a handful of salt and places it in the hands of her husband. He passes it back into her hands without spilling any salt. This is done three times.

And so, just as salt blends well and gives taste to food, the bride must also blend and become an integral part of the family.
