How to properly clean gold-Part 2

Part 2

Naturally gold does not tarnish but other elements which are used to make gold sturdy may react with moisture, sulphur and oxygen and turn it dull. Skin oils, body lotions and perfumes also make your gold dull. If you are unable to remove grunge and dirt from jewelry at home then its probably best to take it to a professional.
Here are some ways to clean gold:

Professional polishing:
If your gold jewelry is not looking new and needs special polishing to be sparkling and shiny then you should consult a professional jeweler, because home cleaning tricks won’t make it shiny as you want. A jeweler will polish your jewelry and use abrasive paper and save your gold from tarnishing.

Machine cleaning:
Sometimes, instead of professional polishing, your jewelry might still not shine, which then means that it needs machine cleaning. In that case automatic cleaning equipments such as ultrasonic, ionic or steam cleaners are used by jewelers to clean gold jewelry.

Ammonia Method:
Ammonia can damage your gold if it used often so use it carefully. Use one part ammonia to six parts water than dip your jewelry in it for a minute. After that rinse jewelry from water and dry it with soft cloth.

Toothpaste Method:
Gold adornments which are used often in daily life can be cleaned with old tooth paste and tooth brush to remove grime.

Jewelry with Gemstones:
Jewelry with gemstones should not be soaked in warm water otherwise stones may come out from jewelry. Clean jewelry with mild soap and then wipe it by using wet soft cloth. After cleaning leave it for a day to dry it.

Boil Water Method:
To remove dirt, oil, grease, wax or grunge from jewelry submerges it in boil water as long as it dips in water all wax, oil and dirt will emerge.

At the time of cleaning jewelry with stones and diamonds be very careful and try no to damage stone. Does not use ammonia for cleaning jewelry with platinum it may darken platinum and do not apply bleach which can permanently discolor your jewelry. By regularly polishing gold jewelry you can avoid the need of washing it.

How to properly clean gold-Part 1

Part 1

Gold is used in the making of necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets, anklets and many other bodily adornments. Gold is considered a long-lasting and precious thing and,  whenever you wear it you want it to be completely dirt free and shiny.

Cleaning Gold Jewelry

To clean gold jewelry first buff it to remove dirt from the surface then put the gold jewelry in warm water for at least an hour and use mild dish washing liquid to remove the dirt.  Use cotton scrub or your fingers for proper cleaning. Do not use toothpastes and harsh chemicals such as baking soda to clean the gold, as it may scratch your jewelry.

After washing rinse your gold completely and then dry from a soft cotton cloth. Let it dry in fresh air until all moisture removed before storing. Do not use stiffer brushes and paper towels to clean jewelry as it can damage the outer surface of gold. Try not to wear gold jewelry while taking a bath or when using ammonia or cleaning bleach. It can permanently damage gold and make it dull and faded.

Store every piece of gold jewelry separately to avoid scratches. You can put jewelry in soft cotton fabric or put it in plastic bag with silica and squeeze air from bag to prevent your jewelry from tarnish. Hang gold chains separately to avoid it from tangling. Keep your jewelry away from sulphur producers like rubber bands, newspapers and silk that increases tarnishing process.

Some gold’s need extra care like 14k, 18k and 24k gold. 14k’s base is usually made up of brass. Abrasive cleaning may scratch the outer layer of this gold that’s why It rarely needs gentle rubbing. 24k gold which is pure gold is very soft and needs special attention for cleaning. White gold plated with rhodium which gives it extra shine is used for making rings. It turns yellow when rhodium wears off from white gold and you can re plate it, but if rhodium is not wearing off you can just wash it in warm water and then dry it with a soft cloth to give it that sparkly look again.

Knowing the Four C's: A quick guide to buying diamonds.

There are four major components to consider when buying that coveted diamond tennis bracelet or princess-cut engagement ring. They are known as the Four C’s: Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat. Understanding these four diamond characteristics will help you wisely decide on the best diamond for you or your loved one.

Color – The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) rates the body color in white diamonds from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). White is the most popular color when it comes to diamonds, but for those that want to be unique, they are available in yellow, pink, green, blue, orange, even black! However, the best color is really no color at all. Having no color allows the light to pass through the diamond easily, resulting in a vibrant display of rainbow-colored light.

Clarity – To be perfect, a diamond must be free from inclusions, blemishes and other flaws. A clarity grade is determined by the amount of inclusions or blemishes that are in or on the diamond. Inclusions can be other minerals, cracks, feathers or anything trapped inside when the diamond was formed millions of years ago.

Cut -The cut of a diamond references to the diamond’s reflective qualities, not the shape. A good cut gives a diamond its brilliance. The angles and finish of any diamond are what determine its ability to handle light, and the price you will pay.

Carat – A carat is the unit of weight by which a diamond is measured. Because large diamonds are found less commonly than small diamonds, the price of a diamond rises exponentially to its size. The carat is the standard unit of weight used for all gemstones. One carat equals .200 grams (or 200 milligrams).
